Waitangi Day Summer Learning Journey Week 4 Day 16

                              Waitangi Day

Waitangi Day is a public holiday in New Zealand. It is a special day for Maori people because they signed treaty with British government in 1840. All New Zealanders enjoy this day in different ways. I enjoy this day with my family. We do BBQ and party. My uncles and aunties visit us. I play with my cousins and my brothers.

  2. Kia ora Alex,

It sounds like you have a lovely Waitangi Day with your family! I also spend the day with my family. It is often quite special as I originally married into a large Maori family and we spent time talking about the significant effect that the Treaty of Waitangi has had on race relations in the country. New Zealand is the only country in the modern world to have a signed treaty between the first nations people (Maori) and the crown/government (white, British settlers).

In Canada (where I am from) there is no signed treaty between our first nations people and the Canadian government. It has led to a number of problems that continue to this day. I wonder if they will ever sign an agreement...

I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Waitangi Day this year. I have my fingers crossed that the weather will be good and we can spend time outside with our family, eating sausages off the barbecue and hanging out together!

    Best,

    Rachel :)

  3. Hi Alex,

It is really interesting hearing how everyone celebrates Waitangi Day. It is a great time to spend with family! I usually spend this day with my family as well, but one day I would love to visit the treaty grounds!

  4. Hi Alex! I also find it very interesting how we all celebrate Waitangi Day differently, and think it's a very important part of our culture. Keep up the great work.
